What are the benefits to taking lessons with my child?
My parents were always very supportive of music even though they did not have any formal musical training themselves. My mother began to play viola when I was a teenager. I fondly remember helping her to learn to read music and develop proper technique. After only one short year, she was proficient enough to join a local orchestra alongside other violists who had been playing much longer!
My father was also very interested in music. He began by playing the cello in his late 40's. Although musical ability did not come naturally to him, he enjoyed the time spent with his family participating in an activity we could all do together.
1. Music is something that can be shared for a lifetime. Playing or learning an instrument alongside your child has numerous benefits. One of the main benefits is that unlike some activities which may only last a year or two based on the physical demands they require, music is an activity that people of all ages can participate in. No matter what your age, you are never too old to take out your violin and play music.
2. Practicing together is more fun than practicing alone. When your child has someone to practice with right in their own home, they will be more likely to take out their instrument. The increased practice time will accelerate learning to a new level. Parents can be very inspirational to children when it comes to learning to play an instrument. Whether the parent is an example of how to play a piece correctly or a "student" for the child to "teach", practicing together will increase your child's motivation to succeed. You may find that you also look forward to your practice time as you begin to see improvement in your own performance and that of your child's on each passing day.
3. Taking lessons together is a way to spend more time with your child. Today's busy schedules mean that many children go from school to after school activities followed by a quick dinner, homework and bed. Why not participate in one of those activities with your child? It might be difficult to join your child on the soccer field or on the balance beam at gymnastics class, but you can certainly join them in their music class! Beyond the lessons themselves, you will spend additional time practicing with your child as well as participating in local performances, sessions, events and competitions!
4. Music is a relaxing activity that can help reduce stress. After a long hard day at work, or a rough day at school, music can help to relieve stress. Playing music becomes an outlet for stressful situations and nerves that come along with daily life. Playing your violin with your child can help you both to unwind from a rough day.
